Alternate Publishing Routes

I don't know about you, but I learn a lot by reading Publishers' Lunch from Publishers Marketplace. Today, for example, I learned of two alternate routes to getting published (as opposed to the traditional way of writing a book, trying to make it better, attract an agent, get a publisher to buy it, and then crossing your fingers). One way, it seems, is to be the daughter of the worst president in the history of the country. Jenna Bush has apparently attracted attention for a book she hasn't even written yet. Sheesh.

Or, considerably more creatively, you could serialize your book on your own website, as Bill Stephens has done with his novel, Horizons Past, which looks like it might actually be good. I'm at least going to give it a try, which I'm NOT going to do with Jenna's book.

Late Night 1989 (Part 1)

Check out a new-ish webzine, Five Chapters that serializes fiction. Today we have Late Night 1989 (Part 1) by Joshua Furst.

Thanks to JimT for the link.

Birds of Providence (Part 5)

Part 5 of Jim Tomlinson's Birds of Providence (the conclusion) is live at Velocity Weekly. I'd love to see more magazines do this kind of thing . . .

As before, check out the artwork of Ryan Meyers that has been accompanying the instalments of Jim's story.

Birds of Providence (Part 4)

Part 4 of Jim Tomlinson's "Birds of Providence" is now live at Velocity Weekly.

Update (11/23/06): Speaking of Jim, today's New York Times carries a nice review of Things Kept, Things Left Behind. I understand that Jim is thrilled, as he should be! Nice Thanksgiving Day present.

Birds of Providence (Part 3)

I was obviously a little slow getting Part 2 linked here; Part 3 of Birds of Providence is up already at Velocity Weekly. This week they've also got an interview with author Jim Tomlinson. Part 4 will be up next week. I've added labels to the installments, so click on "Serials" to read all three!

By the way, I've been loving the artwork accompanying Jim's story. The artist is Ryan Myers and you can see more of his work here.
